The National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” (“KPI named after Igor Sikorsky”) is an institution of higher engineering education founded in Kyiv in 1898. Today it is one of the largest universities in Ukraine in terms of the number of students with a wide range of specialties and educational programs for training technical and humanities specialists.
The Research Centre of NPP’s Reliability and Safety is part of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Nuclear and Thermal Energy, KPI named after Igor Sikorsky. The main objectives of the Center are:
- ensuring compliance with the scientific component in education at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Nuclear and Thermal Energy;
- scientific support for the operation and safety of NPPs of Ukraine through cooperation with the State Enterprise «National Nuclear Energy Generating Company «Energoatom»;
- involvement of the best scientists of the university in such support

The Center’s staff has extensive experience in NPP safety assessments: PSA levels 1 and 2, severe accident analysis, analytical justification of EOP and SAMG , MELCOR 1.8.5 and RELAP5 Mod 3.2 calculations, etc.
Research directions closed to the directions of the Euratom Program
- Strengthening the educational components of the “Nuclear Energy” specialty by including simulation training in the practical part of the university’s professional training courses;
- NPP safety assessment;
- Design and safety of small modular reactors;
- Reliability of NPP systems and units;
- PSA programs;
- Risk-based decision-making.
The main research infrastructure
- Models of the full-scale simulator of power unit No. 3 of the Rivne NPP and Generic PWR with the corresponding simulator software – 3KeyMaster;
- Computer codes for NPP safety assessment: RELAP5 Mod. 3.2, MELCOR 1.8.5, SAPPHIRE 8.0.
