Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine(ISP NPP)

Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (ISP NPP) of the NAS of Ukrainewas established in 1992 as the Interdisciplinary Scientific and Technical Center (ISTC) “Shelter” of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (which later, in 2004, was transformed into the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants as a part of Department of Physical and Technical Problems of Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).

Areas of scientific activity ofISP NPP:

safety of facilities with nuclear technologies;
decommissioning of nuclear installations; transformation of the “Shelter” facility into an environmentally safe system;
neutron-physical and thermo-hydraulic processes;
safety analysis, radiation safety and protection;
handling of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel;
radiation materials science and instrument engineering;
radioecology and emergency response; remote complexes and technologies.

The main research infrastructure of ISP NPP:

research site at the Chornobyl NPP;
data bank and samples of the “Shelter”nuclear materials;
certified laboratories of radiochemistry, spectrometry, dosimetry, materials science and radioecology with modern equipment, which use a wide range of research methods;
expert research system for monitoring neutron flux density and temperature at the “Shelter” facility;
a multi-detector system that monitors the density of the neutron flux and the power of the exposure dose of gamma radiation in the locations of nuclear materials at the “Shelter” facility;
remotely controlled self-propelled units of radiation reconnaissance.
