National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» is a higher technical educational institution founded in 1885 in Kharkiv. Institute of Education and Science in Power Engineering, Electronics and Electromechanics is one of the institutes that are part of the University, which has a   Department of Steam Generator Construction, which activities are relevant to Euratom activities.

The Department of Steam Generator Construction of NTU “KhPI” deals with issues of development, management, diagnostics and reliability forecasting of complex thermal power systems, including power units of thermal and nuclear power plants. Students at the department are trained in two specialties: “Energy-generating technologies and installations” and “Computer-integrated technological processes and production”.

Since December 2016, an agreement on partnership and cooperation in the training of young specialists for domestic NPPs has been concluded between KhPI and SE NAEK “Energoatom”. This provides graduates with guaranteed employment at the NPP, the best students during their studies have the right to receive a personal scholarship from NAEK “Energoatom”.

The department supports close cooperation with scientific organizations of the National Academy of Sciences and branch sciences of Ukraine: with the main research institute in the field of nuclear energy, the National Scienсе Center ” Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology” of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; with the Institute of Mechanical Engineering Problems named after A.M. Pidgorny of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; with the Institute of Electrodynamics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The Research and Design Institute “Molniya” of National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” (R&DI “Molniya” NTU “KhPI”) is also part of the University.

R&DI  “Molniya”  is the  greatest research  and testing   center which  specializes    in the field of high-voltage engineering,  electromagnetic immunity and compatibility, development of electromagnetic technologies of broad  functional purpose on the basis of super-power pulsed electric and magnetic fields. Of particular importance in activity of the Institute are the questions connected with researches of formation of electromagnetic  pulses of natural and artificial origin and their damaging actions on surrounding environment,   primarily on technical means of strategically important objects of Ukraine, in particular on objects of rocket and space, aviation equipment, and maintenance of lightning protection of technical means that are used at such power objects of Ukraine as atomic power plants.

Research directions:

Department of Steam Generator Construction

  • Creation and improvement of theoretical foundations, approaches, methods and models for the synthesis of decision support systems in conditions of information uncertainty at the stages of research, design and operation of nuclear power plants and thermal power plants.
  • Environmentally friendly energy and resource-saving technologies in thermal and nuclear power plants.
  • Development of optimal technological schemes and designs of equipment to ensure environmentally friendly production of electricity and heat by thermal and nuclear power plants, waste heat boilers, hot water boilers.
  • Development of mathematical methods and models for the creation of automated software for optimization of state parameters and diagnostics of complex thermal power systems.
  • Research of processes of thermal disposal of organic industrial waste in furnaces with a fluidized bed.

The main research infrastructure

The test laboratory of R&DI  “Molniya”, which tests technical means for compliance with the requirements of the Technical Regulation of Ukraine on electromagnetic compatibility, in particular, technical means that will be used at strategic objects of Ukraine
