Lviv Polytechnic National University is the oldest technical higher educational institution in Ukraine and Eastern Europe founded in 1816. Over the past ten years, according to the results of international and national rankings, Lviv Polytechnic National University is in the top five Ukrainian universities.

The university consists of 17 educational and scientific institutes. Among them is the Institute of Power Engineering and Control Systems. The “Department of Heat Engineering, Thermal and Nuclear Power Plants” is the closest to the topic of the Euratom Program, where training in the specialty “Atomic Power” is carried out.

The specialty “Nuclear Energy” is related to the study of the principles of generation, transmitting and economical supply of electricity to NPPs. Physico-mathematical, general-technical, economic and humanitarian disciplines are studied in this specialty, as well as the main diagrams of nuclear power plants, designs of reactor, turbine unit and power equipment of nuclear power plants.

Currently, graduates of the department work at large power plants (Khmelnytsk NPP, Rivne NPP, South Ukrainian NPP and Zaporizhzhya NPP) and in research institutions.

Research arears of the department closed to the Euratom Program:

Technogenic and fire safety of NPP, TPP and HPP machine halls:

  • mathematical modeling, research and analysis of technogenic and fire safety of engine halls of NPPs, TPPs and HPPs, under the conditions of hydrogen emission from the turbine unit housing and issuing recommendations on their improvement in oder to extend the operation of power units:
  • mechanical-mathematical substantiation and development of heat-resistant heterogeneous structures of nuclear power plants.

The main research infrastructure

The laboratory has an equipment with help of which students study the design of FA -1000 fuel assembly simulator of VVER -1000 reactor within the disciplines “Nuclear Power Reactors”, “Theory of Nuclear Reactors”. The laboratory also performs work on dosimetric control using portable dosimeters.
