Interest among young people in education and career opportunities in the nuclear energy sector is noticeably growing in Ukraine. According to InfoAtom, in 2026, the three major bachelor’s degree programmes in nuclear energy at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Lviv Polytechnic National University and Odesa Polytechnic received 634 applications, compared with 380 in 2025 and 302 in 2023. At the same time, the number of students admitted to these programmes increased from 62 in 2021 to 105 first-year students in 2026.
This positive trend is the result not only of the development of university education, but also of broader efforts to engage young people and foster their interest in nuclear science and energy. The NURECAB project has made an important contribution in this area by working with young people and promoting nuclear energy among school and university students. The project has supported career guidance and educational activities, youth-oriented events, training sessions and other initiatives aimed at introducing the younger generation to opportunities for education, research and professional development in the nuclear sector.
The growing number of applications for nuclear-related programmes is therefore an important signal: despite the challenging circumstances, young people continue to see opportunities in nuclear energy and consider the sector a promising field for their professional future.
