The GRE@T-PIONEeR project (Graduate Education Alliance for Teaching the Physics and Safety of Nuclear Reactors) is an initiative aimed at advancing specialized education and workforce development in the field of nuclear reactor physics and safety. The project is funded by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten) under project SSM2024-9693 and will run from 2024 to 2028.
GRE@T-PIONEeR represents a significant step forward in the development of nuclear education in Europe. By offering innovative teaching methods and hands-on training, the project equips students with the essential knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in the nuclear energy sector.
The primary objective of GRE@T-PIONEeR is to enhance academic training in nuclear reactor physics and safety. This is being achieved through the development of modern educational courses that combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience. A strong emphasis is placed on innovative teaching formats, including hybrid learning and interactive engagement with instructors. The project also includes practical training on research reactors, giving participants direct experience with nuclear facilities.
The courses are designed for master’s and PhD students specializing in nuclear energy, reactor physics, or related disciplines. They are also valuable for early-career professionals working in nuclear safety or reactor design.
Key course topics include:
- Nuclear data for power and non-power applications
- Neutron transport at the fuel element and assembly level
- Core modeling for reactor design
- Core modeling for transient analysis
- Reactor transients, nuclear safety, and uncertainty analysis
- Radiation protection in nuclear environments
Project Partners:
The GRE@T-PIONEeR consortium includes ten partners from eight European countries:
- Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) – Project Coordinator
- École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland)
- Technical University of Munich (Germany)
