In January 2025, the NURECAB Mobility Programme officially launched as part of the EU-funded project “EU-UA Nuclear Research & Education Capacity Building” (NURECAB), implemented under the Euratom Research and Training Programme, Horizon Europe. One of the key objectives of the project is to strengthen national and international collaboration between Ukrainian and EU-based academic and research institutions in the field of nuclear education, research and innovation. The NURECAB mobility programme was initiated as a practical mechanism to achieve this goal.

The programme supports Ukrainian nuclear professionals, researchers, and students in participation in international and national events related to Euratom’s strategic focus areas. Between January and June 2025, the programme received eighteen applications, fifteen of which were approved. By the end of June, fourteen grants had been funded, enabling participation in nuclear education and research events both in Ukraine and in the EU.

Participants included experienced specialists, young scientists, engineers, and students from a range of organizations. These included Ukrainian universities such as V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University and Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University; nuclear industry representatives from Rivne NPP and «SS «Atomprojectengineering» (Energoatom); as well as participants from private and medical sectors, including the Spizhenko Medical Center and IPP-Center LLC and others. Although these organisations represent a wide variety of activities, they are all actively involved in training specialists, conducting research, and developing technologies for Ukraine’s nuclear sector.

The events attended under the programme spanned multiple formats and countries. Participants joined international and national conferences, forums, internships, and special training events held in Belgium, France, Croatia, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine. Among the most notable were ENEN Special Event, FISA–EURADWASTE 2025, and the European Nuclear Young Generation Forum 2025. In total, eight international and seven national trips were supported.

The NURECAB Mobility Programme continues to foster Ukraine’s integration into the European nuclear research landscape. With only a third of the allocated budget used to date, there remains significant opportunity for future applicants. The programme will remain active until July 31, 2026.

2026 is the year of the announcement of the Euratom Work Programme 2026-2027. Establishing contacts and strengthening international communication with the European nuclear community through participation in Euratom-related events is an essential part of preparing for future competitions. Ukrainian professionals and students are encouraged to apply for funding to enhance their qualifications, establish new professional partnerships, and take part in training, workshops, and events organised by the Euratom research community.

The programme is open to Ukrainian nuclear community working or studying in institutions engaged in nuclear education, research, or innovation. Applications are welcome from both experienced researchers and early-career professionals and students, as long as their proposed activities align with the thematic areas of the Euratom programme, such as nuclear physics, nuclear safety, radioactive waste management, nuclear medicine, fusion and etc.
