The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is launching AIxpertise, a new joint project aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into nuclear science and education. The main goal of the initiative is to create a platform for the effective use of AI in research and engineering processes, covering data collection, algorithm benchmarking, and training programs for professionals.

Modern nuclear technologies generate vast amounts of data that AI can analyze and optimize. The implementation of machine learning algorithms can significantly enhance the efficiency of nuclear reactors, improve safety monitoring, and contribute to the development of new innovative solutions in the field.

AIxpertise focuses on three key aspects:

AIxpertise is creating an online platform for collaboration between experts in nuclear energy and artificial intelligence. The platform will facilitate effective interaction between nuclear science specialists and IT engineers, helping to achieve structured outcomes across the project’s three main directions.

During the initial three-year project cycle, AIxpertise will leverage existing data assets, participant contributions, and technical support contracts to implement its objectives.

The secured online platform with controlled access will include:

  • GitLab repositories – Aggregated data, test specifications, software, and AI models.
  • Interactive forums and discussion boards – For knowledge exchange among experts.
  • Curation and annotation of machine-readable datasets – To enhance AI applications in the nuclear sector.

AIxpertise Project Timeline

  • March 2025 – Global survey on AI needs and use cases in the nuclear sector.
  • Q2 2025 – Bilateral discussions to refine use cases.
  • September 22–27, 2025 – AIxpertise workshop to define the project scope.
  • Q4 2025 – Finalization of the AIxpertise joint project agreement.
  • Q1 2026 – Official launch of the AIxpertise project.
  • 2026–2028 – Implementation of the first project phase, including data analysis, AI model development, and testing.
